Originally commissioned by the South African Department of Information these images were intended to promote a positive image of the country overseas following the adoption of Apartheid, the National Party’s policy of racial segregation.

A Vision of Africa creates a new context for work produced by a young white South African female photographer in the early 1950s, a time when photography was male dominated and South Africa was ruled by a white minority Government.
